Central Marin Ferry Connection Project

Bicyclist on offrampThe Central Marin Ferry Connection Project (CMFCP) is a key section of the North South Greenway. It is at the crossroads of almost all trips between central and southern Marin County, and will provide a much-needed safe bike/ped crossing of East Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Corte Madera Creek, as well as provide a connection to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal and the Cal Park Hill Tunnel.

Presently, the CMFCP is estimated to have a cost of $24 million and has been divided into a Phase A and a Phase B. The project is being designed through funds from the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program which were swapped for state funding.

Railroad Right-of-wayPhase A is estimated to cost approximately $12 million and is funded through Regional Measure 2 and mitigation funds from the HOV project. It will connect the southern terminus of Cal Park Hill Tunnel with a pathway on the railroad right of way that will cross East Sir Francis Drake Boulevard; an off ramp will connect to Larkspur Ferry Terminal. Phase A also includes improvements to Redwood Boulevard. Environmental work will be completed on Phase A as part of the Pilot Program funds, and construction could be completed in 2011.

Phase B is estimated to cost approximately $12 million and is being designed now, but currently does not have construction funding. Phase B will connect with the Phase A structure, building a bridge across Corte Madera Creek. The pathway will then continue along the railroad right-of-way to extend to Wornum at Redwood. MCBC is recommending that the Golden Gate Bridge District change their plans for construction of a parking lot at Larkspur Ferry Terminal and put the $12 million that they have for that project toward the CMFCP instead.

A CMFCP plan which was first completed in 2004 by the City of Larkspur calls for a crossing of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard as an extension of the proposed Cal Park Hill Tunnel pathway with an off-ramp on the south side of Sir Francis Drake that would provide access to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, as well as a crossing of Corte Madera Creek via a new fixed bridge. Once across the creek, the pathway would continue south along the railroad right-of-way to the intersection of Redwood Highway and Wornum Drive, to link up with the existing multiuse path between the wetlands and The Village at Corte Madera shopping center.
