Central Marin Ferry Connection Project

Bicyclist on offrampThe Central Marin Ferry Connection Project (CMFCP) was first identified in the 2001 Marin County Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan as one of the top 25 most important projects in Marin County. It is important because it is at the crossroads of almost all trips between central and southern Marin County. The CMFCP will provide a much-needed safe bike/ped crossing of East Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Corte Madera Creek, as well as provide a connection to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal via East Sir Francis Drake Boulevard.

The CMFCP plan (completed in 2004 by the City of Larkspur) calls for a crossing of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard as an extension of the proposed Cal Park Hill Tunnel pathway with an off-ramp on the south side of Sir Francis Drake that would provide access to the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, as well as a crossing of Corte Madera Creek via a new fixed bridge. Once across the creek, the pathway would continue south along the railroad right-of-way to the intersection of Redwood Highway and Wornum Drive, to link up with the existing multiuse path between the wetlands and The Village at Corte Madera shopping center.

Railroad Right-of-wayIn 2001, the MCBC collaborated with the City of Larkspur to apply for Bay Trail planning funds to complete an alternatives analysis for safe non-motorized access in this area. From 2002 until April 2004, the following agencies participated in a process which resulted in the selection of a project alternative (1B: a new high-level bridge with an off-ramp to SFDB): City of Larkspur, Town of Corte Madera, Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, County of Marin, Caltrans, BCDC, and the Marin County Bicycle Coalition.

In 2006, the CMFCP was folded into the process for the Greenbrae Corridor Improvement Program (a major roadway project which will likely result in a new highway interchange.). As a result, a new alternatives analysis of the multiuse path is now taking place. There is partial funding for construction of the CMFCP from mitigation for the HOV Gap Closure Project ($400,000) and Regional Measure 2 ($8.1 million). In April 2007, MCBC successfully worked to insure the inclusion of $2 million in funding through the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program for construction of the CMFCP, as the project will connect with the Cal Park Hill Tunnel, solve safety problems, and provide access to transit, shopping and residences.
