2010 Bicycle Network Implementation
in Marin Cities and Towns
Every spring, Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) reports on what’s been happening with implementation of the bicycle network in each of Marin’s 11 incorporated cities and town. We’re continually collaborating with public works directors to expand the network of bike lanes, pathways, bike parking and access to public transit.
Since last spring there has been tremendous progress building key gap-closure projects in Marin County, including the Cal Park Tunnel, the Lincoln Hill pathway, and in central San Rafael and in the Northgate and Terra Linda communities. Each one of the projects will connect communities and provide a safer, more accessible route for cyclists.
To get involved, or for more information about bicycle projects in your city or town, please contact David Hoffman, Director of Planning, at (415) 456-3469 extension 4#, or email david@marinbike.org. The latest activities for each jurisdiction are summarized below. We’ll also be publishing a North-South Greenway update this summer.

Corte Madera
The Corte Madera-Mill Valley Gap Closure study kicked off last year and resulted in publication of a draft report to the County. The purpose of the study was to help determine the best bicycle and pedestrian route between Corte Madera and Mill Valley through examination of Alto Tunnel, Camino Alto, Horse Hill routes. MCBC found the published draft report to be significantly flawed regarding projected use of the Alto Tunnel. MCBC drafted and submitted over 100 pages of comments relative to this study and will continue to follow the report’s progress.
Fairfax
Fairfax is currently leading a study of an East-West bikeway that will span from Fairfax through San Anselmo to San Rafael. With a preferred alternative in hand that the three jurisdictions agree to, construction funds can be sought to make the corridor improvements. This study is nearly complete and now awaiting approval by local City Councils. Fairfax is also working to build a segment of bike lanes on Sir Francis Drake eastbound that will connect the library with downtown.
Larkspur
A new multi-use pathway was recently completed between the Heatherwood Gardens and Meadowood neighborhoods, providing local residents and school students with a safe and comfortable route through the community and to school. The Greenbrae Corridor Improvement Project (GCIP) continues to slowly move forward. MCBC has provided significant comments for improvements to nonmotorized transportation throughout the corridor and as part of the project. The Cal Park Hill Tunnel in now in the final stages of construction with the approaches to the tunnel in both Larkspur and San Rafael soon to be under construction. Bicyclists and pedestrians will be able to use the facility when the approaches are completed later this year.
Mill Valley
The Miller Avenue Precise Plan (MAPP) has been in progress for more than nine years. MCBC continues to follow this project and provide input for improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities. A resurfacing of a short portion of Sycamore Avenue just past Mill Valley Middle School as it approaches the multi-use path will take place later this year. The resurface will also include new bike lanes in this segment. A proposed multi-use pathway between Sycamore and Miller Avenue in front of the Redwoods retirement community is currently under consideration. MCBC has provided significant design input for these projects.
Novato
Novato continues to expand their bicycle network with new facilities expected to be completed within the year including the commuter connection along Enfrente Road, and the Alameda del Prado bike lanes being completed by the County later this spring. The Novato Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) is one of the most active in the County, and also commented on the Novato General Plan to ensure complete streets and other provisions for bicyclists. MCBC welcomes Jason Nutt as the new Director of Public Works of Novato.

Ross
The greatly-expanded Ross Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan has been completed and will likely be adopted later this spring. In addition, Ross now allows bicyclists to turn left on to Shady Lane during morning rush hours, and the town installed the County bicycle guide signs, now making for a seamless system of signage throughout eastern Marin.
San Anselmo
MCBC welcomes Steve Myrter as the new Director of Public Works of San Anselmo. Steve now leads one of the most active BPACs in the County. Last spring more than 108 new bicycle parking spots were installed along Greenfield Avenue, San Anselmo Avenue, and at the Park-and-Ride lot at the intersection of Butterfield and Sir Francis Drake. |
San Rafael
Los Ranchitos Road now has newly installed bike lanes as part of the Non-Motorized Transportation Pilot Program (NTPP), and the Lincoln Hill Pathway construction is nearly complete with the last of the sound and retaining wall work finishing as the winter rains subside. Opening of the new Lincoln Hill Pathway is expected to take place in late spring. Both the Los Ranchitos bike lanes and Lincoln Hill Pathway are significant upgrades to the North-South Bikeway. In addition, a new multi-use path that surrounds most of Northgate Mall was completed. MCBC provided significant design input on this great new family-friendly facility in San Rafael. |
Sausalito
Sausalito recently completed some NTPP project work that
will improve circulation around the Sausalito Ferry Terminal
and is currently nearing completion of another NTPP study
that looks at extending the North-South Greenway between
Gate 6 Road and the Ferry Terminal. Bicycle rental traffic to
Sausalito has significantly increased in the past several years
with as many as 2500 cyclists coming to Sausalito on peak
days. MCBC continues to work with the City, bike rental
companies, and the local ferry operators to ensure that the
bicycle experience in Marin County by way of Sausalito
is a good one. Last year the City of Sausalito added 420
new mobile bike parking spaces as a result of the increased
tourism by bicycle to Sausalito.
Tiburon
Shoulder widening took place along Highway 131 (Tiburon
Boulevard) last year as part of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act (ARRA) which has provided additional
space for bicyclists riding on the roadway.
Marin County and West Marin
The County of Marin has been busy this year expanding
and enhancing the bicycle network. The Countywide Bicycle Guide Sign system has been completed with all
signs installed with the exception of near the Golden Gate
Bridge. The bicycle route sign project will now be expanded
to include West Marin. MCBC has provided input on the
new routes. Bike lanes were vastly improved along Las Gallinas
Road out towards West Marin. The proposed repaving
of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard through Samuel P. Taylor
State Park continues to move forward very slowly; MCBC
will provide comments on the DEIR when it is available
later this spring. Design has been completed on the soonto-
be-built Tennessee Valley Pathway that will connect
the Tam Valley community to the Mill Valley-Sausalito
Multi-Use Path; improvements include a proposed stop
light at Tennessee Valley Road and Shoreline Boulevard, and
a raised boardwalk over the wetlands (there is substantial
pavement degredation and occasional submersion of the
current pathway in this area.)
