Center Boulevard Reconstruction Project

Saturday June 19th, 10am - 1pm
Fairfax Women's Club, 46 Park Road, Fairfax

Please join MCBC at this important meeting to identify bicycle and pedestrian improvements at the gateway into Fairfax. This workshop is the second opportunity to brainstorm and present ideas for improvements to Center Boulevard between Pastori and Pacheco Avenue. Attendees will review concepts presented during the previous meeting, discuss what works and what may not, and develop further recommendations for streetscape improvements in the downtown area. It's vital to have a strong turnout of MCBC members at this event to ensure that our needs are fully addressed in this crucial link in the East-West Greenway.

The Center Boulevard Reconstruction Project is an excellent opportunity to improve safety on Center for all users, including bicyclists and pedestrians. MCBC has worked with local cyclists to identify the following issues concerning walking and biking in this area. We need public support from the cycling community to make this vision a reality!

Improvements for bicyclists:

  • Bike lanes are a key element of a successful Center Boulevard redesign.
  • Bicycle parking is essential to encourage people to shop and commute by bike.
  • The intersection of Center/Pastori/Lansdale is very dangerous for cyclists. The redesign project should include a way to improve cyclist safety crossing this intersection.
  • Avoid designs that use diagonal parking. Diagonal parking will be VERY dangerous to cyclists because motorists won't be able to see us.

Improvements for pedestrians:

  • Wider sidewalks will invite people to walk in this part of town, which is good for businesses in the area.
  • Wide, continuous sidewalks should link the existing parking lots to downtown. Rather than adding parking along Center, the Town should encourage walking from the ample parking that already exists.
  • A new crosswalk at the Post Office would improve pedestrian safety.
  • Curb extensions - like those in downtown San Anselmo on San Anselmo Avenue at Creek Park - will shorten the crossing distance for walkers and improve safety. They also provide a great place for bicycle racks out of the way of pedestrians!

Improvements for all users:

  • Improve safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists by reducing automobile speeds. Curb extensions and other traffic calming measures such as speed humps can make the street safer for everyone.
