Marin Countywide Plan

With much relief, after seven years of providing recommendations and attending meetings, MCBC is happy to announce that the Marin Countywide Plan was adopted by the Board of Supervisors on November 6, 2007.

The Countywide Plan was constructed within a framework of promoting sustainability. MCBC used this platform to state that we must address transportation problems in order to become a more sustainable county. When 62 percent of Marin's greenhouse gas emissions come from the transportation sector (people driving motor vehicles), part of the solution is obviously getting people onto their feet and onto bikes!

Some of the policy wins for walkers and cyclists in the Countywide Plan include: a complete streets policy; a goal for 20 percent of all trips to be made by bicyclists and pedestrians by the year 2020; encouragement of walking and bicycling; and the seeking of additional funds for ongoing implementation of the Nonmotorized Transportation Pilot Program ($25 million for building out Marin's bike/ped network). The Countywide Plan also includes targets for increasing bike lanes and pathways, and reducing motor-vehicle miles traveled.

MCBC congratulates the Marin County Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission on the adoption of a plan that places a high priority on bicycling and walking, the only zero-emission modes of transport.
