CENTRAL MARIN FERRY CONNECTION PROJECT MOVES FORWARD
On Wednesday, April 21, 2004, the Larkspur City Council accepted a final report regarding the preferred alternative alignment for the Central Marin Ferry Connection Project (a key section of the North-South Greenway).
The Central Marin Ferry Connection Project (CMFCP) is planned as a bicycle/pedestrian pathway that will run along the former Northwestern Pacific Railroad right-of-way from Redwood Highway at Wornum Drive, over Corte Madera Creek and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, with ramped access to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard. The CMFCP will also link with the planned Cal Park Hill Tunnel bikeway project on an elevated structure separated from automobiles.
The MCBC thanks the City of Larkspur for serving as the lead agency for this planning process (which lasted three years) to determine a preferred alternative for the Central Marin Ferry Connection Project, and to hold Technical Advisory Committee meetings with: the County, the Golden Gate Bridge District, Corte Madera, Caltrans, the Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the Bay Trail Project, and MCBC. This project is now at 30% design, thanks to grants from the Bay Trail Project and MTC's Transportation Funds for Livable Communities Program.
The City of Larkspur is now requesting that the County of Marin take over as lead agency to build and construct the projecty. The MCBC is hopeful that there will be a meeting about this in the near future. Once the lead agency is selected, the project can move forward to full design and with environmental review.
The estimated cost to build the CMFCP project is $9.2 million. The very good news is that the CMFCP was included as part of the funding for Regional Measure 2, and a recent report from the Transportation Authority of Marin showed that most of the funding to build this project has already been secured through Regional Measure 2 and highway mitigation funds.
