Seeking Bicycle Access
On the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge

On October 17, 2002, the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission passed an important resolution urging Caltrans to move forward with direct bicycle access. In addition, on October 15, the Marin County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to endorse direct bicycle access. And in September and October of 2002, four state Legislators also wrote letters encouraging bicycle access on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, including: Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, Assemblymember Joe Nation, Senator Tom Torlakson, and Assemblymember Carole Midgen.

At the present time, Caltrans has committed to doing a Project Initiation Document for bicycle access on the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. This PID would provide an analysis of all of the costs associated with the project, as well as various alternatives. The completed PID is the next step for getting direct access.

Bay Area bicycle advocates are asking for direct access as soon as the seismic retrofit is complete, which would be in 2006.
