MCBC focuses resources to improve bike/ped safety on Shoreline Highway

Latest serious crash with bicyclist spurs push for safety improvements

Traffic often hugs the fog line, leaving cyclists little or no room on the shoulderOn May 26, Claire Diepenbrock was riding her bicycle westbound along Shoreline Highway in Tamalpais Valley when she was hit by not one, but two vehicles. This terrible crash is not the first of its kind along this narrow and fast section of Shoreline Highway. MCBC was been working to quickly mobilize community groups, organizations, and local decision makers to work with Caltrans to implement significant upgrades to this dangerous stretch of road. MCBC, Transportation Alternatives for Marin (TAM), the Tamalpais Community Services District (TCSD), and the Tamalpais Community Transportation Committee (TCTC) sent letters to Senator Mark Leno and Assemblyman Jared Huffman's offices requesting support in working with Caltrans, as well as a letter directly to Caltrans.

Requested safety improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians include:

  • Lowering the speed limit on Shoreline Highway from 35 mph to 25 mph between Loring Avenue and Flamingo Road
  • Creating wider shoulders for bicyclists and pedestrians
  • Install a crosswalk at Flamingo Avenue and connect bike lanes at Almonte Avenue
  • Install permanent interactive speed signs

A copy of the letter and supporting materials developed by MCBC can be downloaded from our website:

We'll keep you posted on our efforts to remediate this terrible section of road for bicyclists and pedestrians so that another crash like the one that severely injured Ms. Diepenbrock never happens again.
