Summer 2007 Share the Road Checkpoints

The Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) continues to disperse Share the Road information at annual Checkpoints with their law enforcement partners. During the month of August, four Share the Road Checkpoints in Fairfax, Novato, Ross, and Sausalito reached 1880 motorists and 560 cyclists and walkers. Each member of the public that passed through a Checkpoint received Share the Road flyers containing tips for courteous and safe road sharing behaviors. Back to school Checkpoints are being planned for September, to encourage greater awareness of travel speed and dart outs when near schools.
The goal of the Checkpoints is to educate all road users about their shared rights and responsibilities; this education is provided by police officers and MCBC volunteers in a friendly atmosphere through handouts that identify the ways everyone can safely and conscientiously share the roads. Two concerns remain at the forefront for the public: bicyclists need to stop at stop signs, and drivers need to provide more space when passing cyclists.

MCBC Executive Director, Kim Baenisch, states, “It’s gratifying to see Marin’s communities continually embracing the campaign. Safe and courteous motorist and bicyclist interactions on our roads makes traveling enjoyable for everyone.”
The Checkpoints are only one component of MCBC’s Share the Road campaign. Visit www.marinbike.org to review MCBC’s Share the Road campaign activities, including bicycle workshops occurring in September/October and free Basic Street Skills classes being held in September and November.
