BIKE TO WORK DAY
Thursday, May 15
INVITE YOUR FRIENDS TO RIDE WITH YOU

Bike to Work Day PosterIt’s time to break out that old bike, oil the chain, and gather your friends. Thursday, May 15, is Bike to Work Day, the Bay Area’s 14 th annual celebration promoting bicycling for health, fun and transportation. Whether you’re a veteran bike commuter, a weekend cycling warrior, or a new leisure cyclist wanting to try out your two-wheeled steed this spring, we’ll be honoring you during May, National Bike Month.

MCBC has several ways to get people in Marin excited about riding their bikes and to inform riders about bicycling’s benefits for personal health, traffic reduction, and our environment.

Eighteen energizer stations will be set up in Marin to cheer our local participants. Energizer StationOn the morning of Bike to Work Day, Energizer Stations hosted by MCBC volunteers will be located along bike-commute routes in Marin to provide free snacks, giveaways and encouragement. All those who join MCBC on Bike to Work Day – and current MCBC members who get their friends to join on Bike to Work Day – may enter a raffle for a new Marin bike. From 4 to 6 p.m. at Mike’s Bikes of Sausalito, bicyclists are invited to celebrate the day with refreshments and to congratulate our Bike Commuter of the Year.

Two Energizer Stations have been cancelled – Paradise Drive in Corte Madera and the San Rafael Canal at Bellam/Francisco Blvd.

From April 1 to May 14, get a 10-minute bicycle safety check during the Bike Safety Checkup Offer at a participating Marin bike shop. For $10, your bike can have a mini checkup to be ready for Bike to Work Day: tire inflation, chain lubrication, bike-safety assessment and recommendations. Call for an appointment at one of the participating bike shops.

On Bike to Work Day (May 15), Elephant Pharmacy in San Rafael (Grand and 3rd St.) will give out free Adina iced coffee and juice beverages to cyclists who ride to Elephant Pharm between 3-6 PM. Stop by on your way home

Kirk KnauerKirk Knauer has been selected as the 2008 Marin Bike Commuter of the Year. Kirk has pedaled from his home to work in San Francisco everyday for more than eight years. Why? “He says it keeps him healthy, wealthy, and wise”, says his son, Benjamin. “My dad gets his exercise, saves lots of money on gas, tolls and parking…and those two things alone seem wise!” Kirk is a great example for his kids and all who encounter him. Join us at Mike’s Bikes of Sausalito from 4-6 PM on May 15 to honor Kirk and celebrate cycling at the ‘end-of-day’ party.

Grab your friends, colleagues, and neighbors to participate in the Team Bike Challenge, a competitionof teams to see which group can travel the most days by bicycle during the month of May. The team with the most points wins a grand prize. Teams of two to five individuals can register at 511.org. Sign and help Marin host 30 teams this year!
