BIKE TO WORK DAY
Thursday, May 14
Yes, You Can Have More Green Fun!
May is National Bike Month and Thursday, May 14, is the Bay Area’s 15 th Annual Bike to Work Day. Join thousands in celebrating bicycling as a fun healthy way to make your local trips – to work, school, the store, library, or movie. As MCBC member, Boog Bookey says, “My bike commute is one of my favorite parts of my life.”
Get excited about riding your bikes and tell others about how bicycling benefits their personal health, traffic reduction, and our environment. Read inspiring stories by Marin bicycle commuters.
Join MCBC and enter the Bike Month Sweepstakes. Grand Prize is a Vintage 1960s Schwinn 3-Speed Lightweight, donated by Joe Bunker, CPA. If you join on May 14 at one of five select Energizer Stations, you’ll also receive a bonus gift, such as caps, t-shirts, magazine subscriptions, and other bike swag.
Seventeen energizer stations will be set up in Marin to cheer our local participants. On the morning of Bike to Work Day, Energizer Stations hosted by MCBC volunteers will be located along bike-commute routes in Marin to provide free snacks, giveaways and encouragement. From 4 to 6 p.m. at Mike’s Bikes of Sausalito, bicyclists are invited to celebrate the day with refreshments and to congratulate our Bike Commuter of the Year.
From April 1 to May 13, get a 10-minute bicycle safety check during the Bike Safety Checkup Offer at a participating Marin bike shop. For $10, your bike can have a mini checkup to be ready for Bike to Work Day: tire inflation, chain lubrication, bike-safety assessment and recommendations. Call for an appointment at one of the participating bike shops.
Feisty, gutsy, and determined. That’s this year’s Bike Commuter of the Year Clay Kaufmann (right), a third grader at Dixie School in Lucas Valley. Other bike commuters may log more daily miles, but Clay is totally committed. He and his father Mark are often seen riding their bikes in the neighborhood. Clay will be honored at the Bike to Work Day end-of-day party from 4-6 PM at Mike’s Bikes of Sausalito on May 14.
Grab your friends, colleagues, and neighbors to participate in the Team Bike Challenge, a competitionof teams to see which group can travel the most days by bicycle during the month of May. The team with the most points wins a grand prize. Teams of two to five individuals can register here. Sign up and help Marin host 40 teams this year!
Encourage your employer to promote Bike to Work Day and the Team Bike Challenge. It’s a great opportunity for them to support their employees in a fun, healthy, cost-saving and environmentally-friendly commute that will benefit the company. Invite them to host an MCBC on-site Bike to Work Day presentation.
Win fabulous prizes! Go to 511.org and sign up for Bike to Work Day. Pedal at least one day during the month of May, and be eligible to win a grand prize of a new bicycle and other great prizes.
