Join the Human-Powered Parade

Saturday, October 8 at 11 AM

Human Powered Parade PosterBe aware, cars. The streets of Fairfax are about to be taken over by people riding their bicycles, bouncing on pogo sticks or using roller blades to get around. No, the city has not run out of gasoline, and automobiles have not been outlawed. This takeover will happen thanks to Marin's first annual Human-Powered Parade. Presented by Safe Routes to Schools and the Marin County Bicycle Coalition, the parade is devoted to acknowledging non-motorized possibilities and celebrating the cultural and practical value of the bicycle!

Remember your walk to school? You meandered in your imagination, facing the day as a mystery before you. Reclaim these memories as you parade, surrounded by unicycles, kinetic sculpture, cargo bicycles carrying musicians, and much more. This new event brings together the practical, the wacky, the fast, and the slow. It celebrates the vibrancy and freedom of a neighborhood filled with people walking and biking to get around. If you believe that the world can be changed one possibility at a time and that the best medicines for bad habits are new habits created in joy, then this event is for you!

The Saturday, October 8, parade will begin and end at the Access4Bikes Biketoberfest, a celebration of brews and bikes in the Fair-Anselm Plaza in Fairfax. Parade participants will gather at 10 a.m. at the Albertson's parking lot west of the Java Hut and will start moving at 11 a.m. Bring your human-powered contraption or your two legs and be a part of history. Whether you ride in jeans or lycra; whether you love single track or take long road climbs through the spectacular views of Marin; whether you move one wheel, two wheels or by foot, you can be a part of this parade. Then join the Biketoberfest fun afterwards.

The 4th Annual Access4Bikes Biketoberfest Bike Festival will open at 11 a.m. and feature the Bike Expo Market Place, offering vendor booths filled with bikes, gear and buys from many retailers and local companies. A great array of vintage, custom and bike originals from the bike greats of yesteryear will be displayed as well. Come enjoy beers poured by local breweries, including Broken Drum, Iron Springs, Marin Brew Co., Moylan's, Lagunitas, Eldo's and more. Dance to live music and enjoy local food specialties.

Parade participants and Biketoberfest volunteers are needed. To be a part of this fabulous event, contact Parade Coordinator Melanie Grubman at 456-3469 ext 5# or Melanie@marinbike.org.
