Marin County Bicycle Coalition

The Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) is recognized as a national leader in bicycle advocacy, and plays a critical role in shaping Marin County transportation policies and projects. MCBC is a non-profit organization that was established in 1998 to promote safe bicycling for everyday transportation and recreation. MCBC has 20 full-time and part-time staff, and its office is located in Fairfax, California. More information about the MCBC can be found at

Summary of Position

MCBC is currently hiring a full-time Advocacy Coordinator who will report to MCBC's Advocacy Director. The Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for successful outreach and public involvement on County of Marin projects, for empowering local citizens to take action in their own town/city, and publicly represents MCBC's positions on infrastructure and policy platforms at public meetings and through written submittals. The position includes direct communication with public works directors, elected officials, MCBC members, and the public about bicycle needs, design issues, priorities and more.


Project Management

  • Manage the following advocacy campaigns and projects:
    • County of Marin Master Bike/Ped Plan implementation
      • Bike Rack installation project
    • City/Town Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan updates and implementation
    • Complete Streets
      • Capital Improvements Project List maintenance
    • Golden Gate Bridge District
    • Golden Gate National Recreation Area
    • National Park Service
    • Caltrans
    • Bay Conservation Development Commission (BCDC)
  • Empower residents to impact changes in their town/city:
    • Create and maintain resources and processes that can be used independently by local citizens to make bicycle improvements in their communities
    • Solicit and maintain 2-4 individuals per town/city as project contacts
    • Develop positive working relations with City/Town Council members
  • Assist Advocacy Director on evaluating and providing comments for EIRs, planning documents, plans, etc.


  • Attend public meetings to promote MCBC's strategy for managed projects
  • Provide public speaking and press relations for managed projects
  • Author articles, website updates, press releases, etc. for managed projects

Grassroots Community Organizing

  • Maintain advocacy web pages with current project updates
  • Create and send email action alerts to members
  • Recruit volunteers to assist with meeting outreach and to present talking points
  • Coordinate design/printing/distribution of promotional materials for advocacy activities/events as needed


  • Provide support to MCBC staff for advocacy-specific fundraising efforts


  • Minimum 3 years experience in planning/design/engineering work or a related degree
  • Familiarity with AASHTO standards and Caltrans Chapter 1000
  • 2-3 years of project management experience
  • Partnership building and collaboration experience with diverse stakeholders
  • Excellent written, verbal and public speaking skills
  • Self-motivated and has ability to take initiative
  • Enthusiastic about bicycling as a form of transportation and recreation
  • Volunteer coordination and motivation experience
  • Ability to manage a multitude of projects simultaneously
  • Detail oriented
  • Availability to attend day and evening meetings
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to make basic website content changes
  • Familiarity with databases (Filemaker a plus)
  • Experience with Constant Contact a plus
  • Ability to work independently and as a team
  • "Can-do" attitude


MCBC's Advocacy Coordinator is a full-time salaried position, and the staff member will work out of a private office in our Fairfax headquarters. Position benefits include:

  • $41,600 - $45,760/year starting salary depending on experience
  • Health and dental benefits
  • 15 days of paid time off (PTO) each year
  • 9 paid holidays each year
  • 4 additional paid days off between Christmas and New Years Day
