Re: Please sign SB 523
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger:
I am writing to urge you to sign SB 523 which would preserve funding for California's most under resourced amenity, the Bicycle Transportation Account.
SB 523 has the support of cities, counties, environmental organizations, public transit agencies, local elected officials, health organizations, and industry leaders including the three largest bicycle production companies in the world (Giant, Specialized, and Shimano) all located in California. In addition to the wide support for the Bicycle Transportation Account, there has been a continued commitment across party lines to promote bicycling. Both Democrats and Republicans have joined together to support this bill.
I have been pleased to learn of your efforts to get Californian's moving again. Physical inactivity, obesity, and diabetes type II are primary concerns. Your message to the people has consistently been to get out and 'Get Active'. Bicycling is a great way to promote physical activity. Include something on why you like to bicycle and why funds for facilities are important.
On July 1, 2006 the BTA is scheduled to receive a decrease in the monthly allocation. Given that close to $50 million in project applications go unfunded each year, this decrease represents a major hurdle for cities looking to provide safe bicycle facilities that can serve as alternatives for commuting. Please sign SB 523 to keep the Bicycle Transportation Account at its current funding level.
Thank you for your leadership, not only for the bicycle community, but also for being a strong advocate for healthy living, physical activity and public safety.
Sincerely,
