SHARE THE ROAD CHECKPOINT DAY A HUGE SUCCESS

Thousands received educational materials at
four Marin Law Enforcement Checkpoints

Despite the day's sweltering heat on Saturday, July 16, approximately 3,000 people received a Share the Road flyer containing safety tips for motorists and cyclists as they passed through a law enforcement Checkpoint. Throughout that day, MCBC, Marin's Police Departments, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the Sheriffs Department established four Checkpoints in Fairfax, Larkspur, Sausalito and Novato. Each Checkpoint operated for 1.5 hours and over the 6-hour span that the Checkpoints were running, approximately 2,200 motorists and 600 cyclists were provided with safety information.

The Checkpoints also provided the public with the opportunity to provide feedback to the officers and MCBC volunteers on their Share the Road experiences. The comments received highlight the need to address single issues with each road user group: cyclists need to stop at stop signs; motorists need to give cyclists more room when passing and behind them.

"The Checkpoint Day was a huge success!" states MCBC Executive Director, Kim Baenisch. "Teaming with the local law enforcement agencies to provide safety information to the public has been a very effective way to show our united support of reducing road rage and increasing traffic safety for motorists and cyclists."

The Checkpoints are only one component of the Marin Share the Road campaign. Visit www.marinbike.org to review all our 2005 Share the Road activities.
