Free Workshops on Safe Routes to Schools
For New and Continuing Programs
The successful Marin Safe Routes to Schools Program is now being offered Countywide thanks to a grant through the Marin County Congestion Management Agency. Last year 14 elementary and middle schools participated in the program.
The Marin County Bicycle Coalition, which implements Safe Routes to Schools, is offering free training for school representatives -- including parents -- who wish to start or continue a Safe Routes to Schools program this fall.
- Introduction to Safe Routes to Schools, How to Organize a Walk to School Day event - Wednesday, August 28, 7 p.m. San Rafael Community Center, 618 B Street.

To sign-up for any of these workshops, contact Program Director Wendi Kallins at 488-4101 or wendi@marinbike.org. The best time to start a Safe Routes to Schools program is in the beginning of the school year. International Walk to School Day (October 2) provides an organizing forum for schools, kids and parents.
Safe Routes to Schools is a project of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition. It is under contract with the City of San Rafael to offer the program countywide. Nelson/Nygaard acts as project manager and David Parisi & Associates provides engineering consultation.
The Marin County Congestion Management Agency estimates that 21% of morning traffic is caused by parents driving their children to schools. During the first two years of Safe Routes to Schools, participating public schools saw the percentage of kids walking and biking jump from 21% to 38% of the mode share.
