Marin County Receives $1.2 Million In State Funding For Three Bicycle and Pedestrian Projects

The State of California just announced the winning projects for the State's Bicycle Transportation Account and the Safe Routes to Schools fund. Marin County received funds for three projects:

  1. Directional Signage Program: The County of Marin received $189,000 to fund a directional signage program for bicyclists throughout the County of Marin. This will enable cyclists to know what destinations they will be heading towards at key intersections, so that residents and visitors will be able to navigate themselves more easily. The Marin Public Works Directors Association recently selected a uniform sign for the County which will have a logo of Mount Tam in the background. This will complement the County's Share the Road signage program.
  2. Bike Lanes on Atherton Avenue in Novato: The County of Marin received $566,200 to fund Class 2 bicycle lanes on Atherton Avenue between Bugeia Lane and School Road, helping to close a gap in the system.
  3. A New Bike/Ped Bridge in Fairfax: The Town of Fairfax received $430,650 in funding to build a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge that connect Manor Circle with Sir Francis Drake, taking non-motorized transportation off the narrow bridge which is used by automobiles.

Details on all program funding can be found at: http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/LocalPrograms

Deb Hubsmith, executive director of the Marin County Bicycle Coalition says, "Marin County's Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan is truly paying-off. Marin is eligible for these funds because we have done good planning. The funding of these projects will close gaps in the bicycle and pedestrian system, making walking and cycling safer and more convenient for everyone."

The next deadlines for these grant funds are as followings:

  • Bicycle Transportation Account ($7.2 million available statewide): due December 2, 2002.
  • Safe Routes to Schools Fund ($20 million available statewide): due in May 2003.
