Black Mountain Cycles
Black Mountain Cycles
is the newest bike shop in
West Marin. Owner Mike
Varley felt the need to open
his own shop after working
for 13 years at Haro Bikes
as the product development
manager. On a visit to Steve
Potts in Point Reyes Station last year and after hearing a
comment that Point Reyes needed a bike shop, his gears
started turning.
Mike’s plan is to fill West Marin residents’ needs for a full-time bike shop and have a core selection of bikes and parts that represent the best that Northern California has to offer. The shop will also stock parts that commuters and tourists need such as lights, fenders, racks, and bags.
Mike’s philosophy is that “after designing bikes for many years, I will also sell my own bikes and frames. Because I believe that the bike shop is the main brand that a bike shop has to offer, I want to add my own touch to the bikes in my shop. They will be simple steel frames for riding on the road or trail, to work, or to the store, and available by spring of 2008.”
The shop is equipped with couches, so if you want to hang out and check out the old magazines and bike literature you’ll be quite comfortable. Also on display is a collection of vintage mountain bikes from builders such as Salsa Cycles, Ibis, Tom Ritchey, Mantis, Fat Chance, and Steve Potts.
You can visit Black Mountain Cycles on their website, or check out Mike’s blog.
Black Mountain Cycles is located at 11101 Highway 1, #B (across from the surf shop) in Point Reyes Station, CA 94956. 415-663-8125.
