Gabion wall repair Construction Begins China Camp – Progress on the Shoreline Trail

A big MCBC Thank You! to the 35 volunteers who worked on the Shoreline Trail repair job at China Camp State Park last week. Thanks to their efforts we are finally close to getting the trail open again after the major storm impacts which hit earlier this year.

On Friday, 15 core volunteers replaced trail barriers, pulled out split rail fencing, made the trail passable for equipment and started the excavation of the footing for the Gabion (rock filled basket) retaining wall.

The next day, more than 30 volunteers showed up to enthusiastically unload and carry the Gabion materials up the trail, then assembled several at the construction site. Volunteers also transported many of loads of rock to fill the Gabions and installed filter cloth as part of the project.

The volunteers ran the gamut from a Drake High School mountain bike team member and his dad working on their first project, to seasoned men and women who had gone through the VIPP training. People came from all over the Bay Area — Napa, the East Bay, San Francisco and of course Marin. These are hearty folks doing a major trail construction project as volunteers. Our “hats off” to all of them.

When we weren’t hefting gear, rocks or gabions, we managed to get a few photos of the work in progress:
